About
Heard it through the scuttlebutt.
Scuttlebutt is sailors' slang for the casks of fresh water on a ship — and, by extension, the gossip swapped while filling them up. Island Scuttlebutt is the modern version for the San Juans: a live directory of who's open, what's on special, and what's happening this week, kept current by the business owners themselves.
Why this exists
Island life runs on its own clock. Island Scuttlebutt gives businesses one place to post their open/closed status, today's special, an unexpected closure, or an upcoming event. The rest of us can check before we drive out.
If you're browsing
- Live open/closed status. Open, closing soon, special hours today, hours not set yet — color-coded on every listing card.
- Filter by island, category, or "open now." If you're signed in, your filters stick across visits.
- Specials and events.Tonight's live music, this morning's fresh bake, the trivia night every Tuesday — all in one place.
- No account needed to look.Sign in only if you want filter prefs to follow you or you're a business owner.
If you run a business
Listing is free. You get a simple dashboard to update weekly hours, post a today-only special ("cardamom buns out at 8am"), flag an unexpected closure, add events, invite teammates, and hide your page while you're editing.
How info stays current
Most listings are kept up to date by the owner or a teammate. For places that already maintain a public calendar elsewhere — like the Orcas Island Public Library's events page — we pull in their schedule once a day so it shows up here without anyone having to type it twice. Entries from a community calendar are labeled clearly, and the owner can take over by editing them.
